Well, I did say last time that the next lore bomb would be about Gateways, didn't I?
Gateways are locations which are accessible from both the human world and the demon world, a sort of neutral space that technically belongs to the demon world, as that's where it takes up space, and thus is settled primarily by demons. There are two different types of gateways.
Shrine Gateways are not always shrines, but are generally locations with high spiritual energy that barely connects. These serve as train stations, more or less, which can bring humans to the nearest functioning gateway.
Functioning Gateways, or Town Gateways are entire towns, which are bustling urban areas. These towns are teeming with employment for both demons and humans, as this is where humans with contracts go to fulfill their side of the deal, donating blood, dreams, or other things every week. Known gateway towns include Ura Town which is located in Kyoto, with shrine gateways available in most areas of Japan. There is a shrine gateway located by the river in Korekara Town. Another known Town Gateway is San Nikolai which is located in California.
So who uses these gateways? Humans, mostly. Oh, which humans? Well, Chigau Ko visits often to exchange dreams for strength. Sachiko Ryuunosuke is blessed with the confidence to use her singing voice, a confidence which grows more each time she donates her fears. After breaking up with Nagito Masaomi, Shin Orihara summoned another, much more lustful demon who offers her services in exchange for blood, an exchange which occurs twice a week. Victoria Jean has no demonic contracts, but visits anyway because she feels like it. Annie Rideout has a contract with a fallen seraphim who protects her, feeding off of the praise Annie recieves and sending the surplus back to the demon world.
I don't really have a fitting image for this lore bomb, so here's Annie in the backless sweater meme.
